Eisstockschießen (ice stock sport) is likened to curling, and is a fun Austrian pastime. Like table tennis in China, it seems the older you get, the better you get.

This week’s photo comes from my gallery of Austria and was taken in the state of Kärnten (Carinthia). This area is known for its mountains and lakes, and is situated within the Eastern Alps, bordering Slovenia and Italy.
On the day the Sochi 2014 winter olympics officially opened, I took the time to try first hand one of the former olympic sports. It requires incredible technique that takes time to master, but importantly as a leisure activity it’s right up there with the best.
